SYNOPSIS:
Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) was a decorated military general from the Goryeo Dynasty framed as a traitor and killed by his master, the young King. Years after his death, he is cursed by the almighty to stay immortal forever and endure the pain of seeing his loved ones die as a punishment to the beastly kills he committed in the wars to protect his country. He becomes an immortal goblin, helping people with his powers and being a kind man in spite of his grieving past. The only way to put an end to his immortality is the Goblin's bride, whose aid in pulling out the sword will culminate his painful immortality. Ji Eun-Tak (Kim Go-Eun) is a bubbly high school student who remains cheerful and hopeful despite her tragic life. She summons the goblin by chance and their fates begin to entwine. Goblin's nephew Yoo Deok-Hwa (Yook Sung-Jae) leases the Goblin's house to a grim reaper (Lee Dong-Wook) and the two end up living under the same roof. Sunny (Yoo In-Na) is a charismatic young lady who runs a chicken shop in which Ji Eun-Tak works as a part timer.
As the lives of Kim Shin, grim reaper, Ji Eun-Tak and Sunny interweave, a deeper story unfolds as they are not just strangers who met-by chance but people with deep-rooted relations.
REACTION:
This show was absolutely amazing and I loved every second of it. This is the drama that many people recommend to people who are new to Korean Dramas and I can see why. It’s entertaining to the point that you can’t help but binge watch it.
The story line for the show is very interesting and fun. Lately, I have found myself watching a lot of “supernatural” k-dramas but they all seem to be different in their own way. This one is one of my favorite “supernatural-afterlife” dramas. The fact that the only person that could release him from his curse is the person that he will end up loving is so messed up. I LOVE IT! All of the characters' stories were great and I couldn’t help but be emotional, especially during the last episode.
And it is not listed with the show but I think this show was also a comedy. Literally every episode I was laughing. Especially with the relationship between Kim Shin and the Grim Reaper. The dynamic between the two is absolutely amazing and hilarious. Of course other characters were funny as well, but these two were hilarious. Also, I think Kim Shin’s funniest moment was the movie theater scene (Ep. 7). Oh my god that was hilarious and you will know what I mean when you watch it. There is also a hidden meaning in the movie that they are watching at the theater (hint: it has to do with the actor that plays Kim Shin). Knowing this fact will make the scene even more funny.
Although this show was very entertaining and the characters all brought their own importance to the show, there was one thing I couldn’t get over while watching: the age difference between Kim Shin and Ji Eun-Tak. Ji Eun-Tak is a high schooler while Kim Shin “is” like 40 something (technically he is like 800 years old or something like that). But the fact that a high schooler and a grown adult were starting a relationship was a little weird to me. I know that it’s obviously a show but still for some reason I wasn’t able to shake that weirdness.
But still, it was a great show and I know the age difference is needed for the story line. I will definitely be watching it again.
Disclaimer: There are only 16 episodes!!! On Viki they have 3 specials for the show which is why it shows there are 19 episodes. Oh my god not knowing this had me messed up at the end of the last episode. My mind and soul was ready for 19 episodes. But once episode 16 ended and there was nothing else, I was f***ed up. I was emotionally and spiritually ready for 16 episodes. I literally couldn't stop crying at the end of the episode because I was so upset there was no more content. So I just want to make sure everyone knows this so you don’t end up like me.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO:
- Anyone who is new to Korean Dramas
- Anyone who is likes fantasy, after-life content
- Anyone who loves Yook Sung-Jae and is sad that he enlisted this week :(
FAVORITE SONG FROM OST:
The OST for this drama was really good! I actually ended up listening to one of the songs before watching the show because its really good. However, that song ended up not being my favorite song after watching the drama.
My favorite song from the OST is actually the opening song from the drama “Round and Round” by HEIZE and Han Suji. I don’t usually watch the opening of shows (because they usually show scenes from the show that I haven’t seen yet) but for this show I watched every opening for this song. I can’t tell you the specific reason why I love this song, I just do. It sounds mysterious and low-key spooky. But it is also so beautiful. Their voices perfectly mix with the many instruments that are played in the song.
Honorable Mention: “Stay With Me” by Chanyeol and Punch, “Who Are You” by Sam Kim, “The first snow” by Jung Joonil
